Phenomenex Lux is a range of polysaccharide-based chiral columns designed for efficient and reproducible enantiomeric separations in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and other analytical applications. The product line combines coated and immobilized chiral stationary phases, providing a broad range of selectivities and significant flexibility during method development and optimization.
The classical coated Lux phases provide proven chiral selectivity for a wide range of compounds, while immobilized i-phases expand method capabilities through increased compatibility with organic solvents and greater freedom in mobile-phase selection.
Six classical Lux polysaccharide phases have demonstrated the ability to separate more than 92% of the tested enantiomers, while their broad and complementary range of selectivities makes it possible to achieve challenging chiral separations.
Coated and Immobilized Lux Phases
Coated Phases
The classical Lux portfolio includes six phases:
- Lux Amylose-1
- Lux Amylose-2
- Lux Cellulose-1
- Lux Cellulose-2
- Lux Cellulose-3
- Lux Cellulose-4
These phases provide a broad range of chiral selectivities and are guaranteed alternatives to the corresponding CHIRALPAK® and CHIRALCEL® columns.
Immobilized Phases
To further expand chiral screening capabilities, Lux also includes immobilized phases:
- Lux i-Amylose-1
- Lux i-Amylose-3
- Lux i-Cellulose-5
Immobilization of the chiral selector enables the use of a broader range of organic solvents and chromatographic conditions, which is particularly valuable during method development for compounds that are difficult to separate using conventional coated phases.
Coated and immobilized phases therefore complement each other: when a standard coated phase does not provide the required selectivity, switching to an i-phase opens up additional possibilities for method optimization.
Key Advantages of Lux
- Broad Range of Chiral Selectivities
Eight types of stationary phases enable an effective screening strategy and help identify the optimal selector for a specific compound.
- High Probability of Successful Separation
Six classical Lux phases demonstrated the ability to separate more than 92% of the tested enantiomers.
- Guaranteed Alternative to DAICEL
Lux phases are guaranteed alternatives to corresponding CHIRALPAK® and CHIRALCEL® columns and can provide equivalent or better separation performance.
- Greater Flexibility with Immobilized Phases
Immobilized phases expand the choice of mobile phases and organic solvents, providing additional flexibility for optimizing challenging chiral separations.
- High Reproducibility
Lux columns are designed to deliver consistent results from batch to batch and from column to column, which is particularly important for quantitative analysis and routine methods.
- Versatile Chromatographic Modes
Lux columns can be used in Normal Phase (NP), Polar Organic (PO), Reversed Phase (RP), and SFC modes.
- HPLC + SFC on a Single Column
Lux columns are compatible with both HPLC and SFC, while pressure stability up to 300 bar (4350 psi) enables reliable operation under high-pressure SFC conditions.
- Scale-Up from Analytical to Preparative Separation
The availability of different particle sizes and preparative formats enables scaling of developed methods. Axia™ technology provides highly reproducible column packing, improved efficiency, and increased loading capacity for preparative separations.
